Book Review: Baking Powder Wars

This book is filled with the history of baking powder. I did not realize that there was such a war between different brands. This one little product changed the way that people around the world would bake fro 1856 to the present. Even though she focused on the top brands she did mention how there were over a hundred that were vying for the consumers' business.

This unique history book was fascinating to me, a history buff. I wasn't sure what to expect but I found it interesting.

I was given this book by NetGalley and University of Illinois Press in exchange for my honest review.

Cookbook Review: The New Sugar and Spice

The New Sugar and Spice by Samantha Seneviratne is filled with wonderful recipes and photographs of foods which are made of ingredients many have right in their cupboards. Along with these items, I also enjoyed the little tips and stories about the different items along with techniques to help anyone have success with their baking.

I enjoyed reading this book and when I would turn the page to see each photograph my mouth would water so that I can not wait to make each and every recipe included. I would encourage any baker or would-be-baker to buy this book and enjoy!

Book Review: Get Your Bake On

Brian Emmett, the author of Get Your Bake On, is a winner of the American Baking Competition. With this book, the reader gets so much more than recipes. Emmett gives tips to help each baker become successful, then he gives the background of each recipe that he places in this book. Many of the recipes were used on the television competition.

I found this book fun to read through and the recipes were straight-forward and they do not call for ingredients that are not usually kept in most kitchens. With this book as my guide, I have actually worked up the courage to create my own pie crust (I admit, I have always used store-bought crusts). Thank you Mr. Emmett for this wonderful resource that I know that I will use for years to come.

Cookbook Review: Bread and Butter

Bread and Butter is full of vegan and gluten-free recipes. Erin McKenna includes sections on assistance with ingredients, such as the different flours and powders, sweeteners, and fats. Then there is a help section that is filled with FAQ which helps to resolve potential problems people may have when first approaching this style of baking.

Then come the recipes. She has sections called : the waking hours; breads; sandwiches; pizza and focaccia; this is for the kids; foreign affairs; puff pastry and beyond; snacks; dips and dressings; bread reborn and sweets: the bonus round.

I did try a few of the recipes from the breads and the snacks and they were easy to understand and follow. Plus the items turned out wonderful.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who cooks gluten-free and vegan.

I received this book from blogging for book in exchange for my honest review.
