Book Review: Red: The True Story of Red Riding Hood

Red: The (Fairly) True Tale of Red Riding Hood by [Shurtliff, Liesl]I was given this book by NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Different versions of fairy tales intrigue me. This one has Red being fearless, unless there is magic involved. Now she has to turn to it to try to help her granny, who is ill.
She asks Goldie to help her. Goldie is blond and likes trying porridge. Together they go through the dwarves' caverns to come to a haunted well and a castle that belongs to a beast. Unbeknownst to them a wolf and a  huntsman are on their heels.
I love this take on the story. I know my grandchildren would take to it right away. There are enough surprises to keep them reading to the end.

Book Review: Gracie Meets A Ghost

I was given this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
In this cute picture book, Gracie is a bunny who has new glasses. She loses them on the mountain one day so she decides to go there to get them back. Without her glasses, she doesn't see well, at all. So when a ghost appears it doesn't scare her at all, because she cannot see it.
I love this book and I believe that my grandchildren will also.

Book Review: Ruff Justice

Ruff Justice (Melanie Travis) by [Berenson, Laurien]Disclaimer: I was given this book by NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
I love books and dogs, so when I saw this book cover I had to get this book to review. I was blessed with lovely weather and no distractions so I was able to pick up this book yesterday and I finished it this morning. I loved it.
This book is a cozy mystery which centers around the world of a dog show, a murdered vendor and her missing friend and tenant. The connection between the murder and the tenant becomes clearer when secrets start appearing.
As I stated before this book was a nice quick read, especially when you can settle back and enjoy it. The description of the world of dog shows and the world of teaching are very well written, as are the characters, including the dogs.
I highly recommend this book and I hope to be able to read more by this author soon.

Book Review: The Cat Who Moved A Mountain

The Cat Who series centers around Qwilleran, a reporter who always seems to come across crimes, Koko, a Siamese cat who has amazing talents and Yum Yum, another Siamese cat who is loved by the other two. In this book Quill rents a house on Big Potato Mountain. The house is owned by J.J. Hawkinfield. Hawkinfield ends up pushed off the mountain by someone that call Big Potato Mountain his home. Qwill is not sure that they have the right man and soon the three are on the trail of the crime.

This is the second time I have read these books and I enjoy them just as much as the first time. The author, Lilian Jackson Braun now how to captivate her readers with crimes that have twists and turns before coming to an end. Qwill, Koko and Yum Yum work their ways into the heart without too much difficulty. Altogether, I recommend this book, and series, very highly.

Book Review: Mae and June and the Wonder Wheel

This is a children's chapter book where June and Mae are new neighbors. After becoming best friends they turn to the Wonder Wheel to determine what their adventures will be each day. Each spin brings fun times for both girls. Perhaps they need to find something blue that day or do a good deed. In addition to this June can hear her dog, Sammy talk. Should she tell Mae?

This book is suggested for grades 2-4 but I believe as a read aloud book children younger than this can enjoy it also. This high energy book will sweep kids away with ease. This is a fun, friendly book that I believe most children will enjoy.

I was given this book by NetGalley and HMH Books for Young Readers in exchange for my honest review.

Book Review: A Hiss Before Dying

A Hiss Before Dying is a cozy mystery in the Mrs. Murphy series.

During the Autumn, while the world is going about its normal routines of cleaning and preparing for winter, the annual rabbit hunt takes place. During this event the beagles and the hunters come up with a different find of find....a dead body.

Previously a missing truck driver's corpse was found, although it could not be identified. Where these too connected? Harry Haristeen finds some clues which go back to the area right after the Revolutionary War.

Through the help of the cats, Mrs. Murphy, Pewter, and Tucker, the mystery begins to unravel.

I enjoy reading about the likeable characters and the interesting parts about the history involved. I did not want to put this book down once I started.

I was given this book by NetGalley and Bantam in exchange for my honest review.

    Children's Book Review: Legs

Legs is about a baby meerkat named Miki. He and his mother live in a zoo where he is happy. Eventually, though, Miki begins wondering about the world outside of his home. One day he gets lost when he goes a little farther out than normal. Then he sees legs all around him and he begins to wonder who all these legs go with. Animal legs turn to people legs and then he see his friendly keeper's feet. When the keeper picks him up he sees how all the scary legs belong with happy, friendly faces.

Such a cute book, with fun illustrations. I loved this book and I can see it becoming a favorite in a family's story time.

I highly recommend it for all families.
I was given this book my NetGalley and Lion Hudson Plc, in exchange for my honest review.

Book Review: Are We Smart Enough To Know How Smart Animals Are?

Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are?Are We Smart Enough To Know How Smart Animals Are? by Frans De Waal, is an insightful book to help the reader gain knowledge of animals. As an animal lover and respecter, I love the teaching De Waal places in this book. He does recognize the difficulties in testing each animal, as each has different temperaments, anatomy and interests. This led him to look at the differences in motivation and attention.

I felt like anyone who has an interest in animals, whether curiosity or a love, would enjoy this book. I would recommend it.

I was given this book by NetGalley and W.W. Norton & Company in exchange for my honest review.

    Book Review: ZooBorns Mother Love

This is a book full of the love between mothers and their babies. Filled with adorable pictures of animals, this book tugs at the heartstrings.

The copy that I received from NetGalley was only a partial copy but the pages that I received would make a wonderful snuggle time with mothers and their little ones. The pictures make you want to see more as they show the struggles that mothers go through to make sure their young are safe and loved.

Based on what I was able to see, I would recommend this book to anyone that loves to read to little ones.
