Book Review: How to Window Box

How to Window Box: Small-Space Plants to Grow Indoors or Out by [Gordon, Chantal Aida, Benoit, Ryan]This how-to book is great for those who love window boxes or would like to try one, or more. There are box ideas for both indoors and out along with a variety of plants.

To begin, they discuss what to consider for either the outdoor box or the indoor box. This includes the amount of sun a site received and what constitutes full sun, part sun, part shade, or shade. The tools required, how to buy plants, whether a plant is an annual, perennial or biennial, different planting medium, surface materials, watering and so much more. There are even hint boxes throughout which talk about different things like sun deprivation.

From here they show and talk about different kind of window boxes, such one for sand loving plants, herb gardens, or perhaps a tropical box.

I found the illustrations and directions throughout the book to be helpful. They take the reader through everything needed for a box from location to feeding.

I recommend this book to the do-it-yourself person or anyone that enjoys plants.

Book Review: Stone Painting for Kids

This is a book designed to help each child be creative with something as simple as a stone. Published by Dover Stone Painting For Kids is filled with ideas for paining many different shapes of stones or seashells.

Inside parents and children can find: Geometric Shapes, Numbers, Letters, Hearts, Faces, Multipebble Flowers, Mushrooms and more. Plus there is a bonus section where it shows how to use this creativity to build skills in mathematics, science, themes, storytelling and spelling.

It goes through the steps of choosing and preparing the stones and then the supplies that will be needed. The pictures and directions are clear and large. I can see my granddaughter and grandson using this book quite a bit.

I believe it is a great book to help fill the time when the creativity cells need a little nudge. I love this book and I believe that it could find a good home in a family, a school, a daycare, almost anywhere.

Book Review: Creating Celtic Knotwork

I enjoy Celtic knotwork, plus I am working on keeping a journal this year. So when I came across this book, I fell in love.

The book begins with a basic grid page, to be copied, then continue on with the basics, such as a basic Celtic knot and how to modify it. They also give models of different knots such as the trefoil knot.

Some of the other sections in this book include borders and corners, crosses, spirals, maze and step patterns, zoomorphics, techniques and materials.

I found this book to be just right for me. I am not usually a very good pencil artist, but with this book in my hand, I believe that I can make a start at creating my own Celtic knotwork.

Book Review: Amish Knit Lit Circle

Amish Knit Lit Circle: Smicksburg Tales 3 by [Vogel, Karen Anna]This is the third book in The Amish Knitting Circle series. I feel like these people have become a part of my life. In fact, this book centers around two of my favorite things to do, knitting and reading.

In this book, the circle has come to include English and Amish. Now the circle has come to include the discussion of books as the women knit for the homeless. Some of the books that they discuss include Pride and Prejudice, Little Women, a Christmas Carol, Anne of Green Gables, The Life of Our Lord, Emma, Black Beauty, Pilgrim's Progress and The Secret Garden. Each of these books have been favorites of mine so it was interesting to see the women's viewpoint and how each of these books touched their lives.

This series has fast become a favorite of mine.

Book Review: Make it Yours

Yellow Owl Workshop's Make It Yours: Patterns and Inspiration to Stamp, Stencil, and Customize Your Stuff by [Schmidt, Christine]I was not sure what to make of this book from the cover when I requested this book. However, Make it Yours is just the book for those who like to be crafty. The variety of craftiness includes: Abstract & Geometric Patterns; Everyday Patters; Custom Motifs; Occasions and Celebrations; Flora and Fauna; Travel-Inspired Patterns.

Some of the media used are washi paper, cork, cloth, furniture and so much more.

Each design includes and estimated time for the project, a difficulty level (from 1-4), techniques to learn through the project, how to remix the technique, materials needed, a full-color picture of the item and step-by-step instructions.

When I opened this book, I fell in love with it. The different techniques I could see myself learning and using and then sharing with my grandchildren is amazing.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who sees themselves as crafty, or would like to be.
