Book Review: Girl on the Leeside

Such a moving book. This is the story of Siobhan Doyle, who was raised by her Uncle Kee. Her mother was killed in an IRA bombing which has led Kee to be protective of Siobhan. These two share a love for the lough, the Leeside, their pub, and Irish poetry.
Kee come home filled with the exciting news that a literary scholar from America is coming to stay. This fills Siobhan with mixed feelings. She has no love for Americans and does not want someone to come and destroy her idyllic life.When he appears Siobhan realizes that there is so much more life away from Leeside and her uncle. Then she discovers that her father is still alive. Now she is filled with questions when it comes to her future.
This book grabbed me from the prologue and the introduction of Kee and his sister's mother and their early life. This gave me a feeling of truly knowing this family and to feel the ties that Kee and Siobhan would have.
The author was able to create a world that was so well-written that I could visually the world surrounding Kee and Siobhan without any effort. Plus the poetry that is inserted effortlessly throughout helps further draw the reader into the magical world that is Ireland.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I give it a high recommendation.

Book Review: Christmas on the Coast

On the island of Jersey, Libby does not feel the Christmas spirit. Her work with the police and her role as vicar's wife are overwhelming her. Her children also feel this and now Stella, her friend, is holding a family grudge that Libby is unsure about. When she reads her late great-aunt Queenie's diary she discovers a secret held during the Nazi occupation of Jersey in 1941. As she continues she begins to understand why these secrets still affect her family's life and Stella's. Will the Christmas spirit be able to help Libby, her family and Stella?

I became immersed in this book from the beginning. I felt like I understood what Libby, her family and Stella were experiencing. When I placed this book down, I wanted to pick it back up and continue. I enjoyed the writing as it seemed very personable, fun, humorous, at times and gave me a glimpse into these lives.

Book Review: The Truth

The world of Ankh-Morpork may not be ready for the newsletter, Ankh-Morport Times. This publication was created by William de Worde, a journalist who has a gift for investigating. This skill has created enemies who now want to stop his presses. Soon they create The Inquirer, a tabloid which deals in items that are not the truth.

DeWorde found out Lord Vetinari, the city's patrician, has a story which could cause big trouble. DeWorde, discovers that the truth is something that is needed to reveal the entire story.

I love the works of Terry Pratchett and his stories in DiscWorld. He was such a genius when it came to crafting words in subtle ways so they make you smile just looking at the page and anticipating what is coming up.

I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys these books or to those that enjoy fun fantasy.

Book Review: Good At Games

Jill Mansell is such a gifted writer. Good at Games is a good example of her work.

This book is filled fun characters, and situations. I had a hard time putting it down once I started.

Suzy married young and then that marriage fell apart, however the two remained friends. She loves chocolate but, not working off the calories. She is not the neatest person. She is a real estate agent who works for her older brother, who cannot get enough of work.

The story does do a lot of jumping from one characters viewpoint to another, but I had a smile on my face throughout, regardless.

I highly recommend this book.
