His Truth is Marching On: John Lewis and The Power of Hope

 

This book was a little overwhelming at first, but as I went through it, it gained in relevance. It does begin with quite a bit of religious content and I could see if a non-Christian picked up the book, they would probably put it back down. I am glad that I did not.

As the book progressed there is discussion on whether John Lewis is a saint and then it goes on to tell of earlier stories of him, including one where he accidentally drowned a chicken that he was baptizing only to see it come back.

I truly like John Lewis' message against hatred and I am so glad that I read this book cover-to-cover. The words within will stay with me for a long time.

Book Review: Managing Bubbie

Russel Lazega's grandmother escaped from a nursing home, which is pretty easy for someone that escaped a concentration camp. Her family help support her decisions. This was not always easy but the story made a wonderful, loving, humorous book. It will help to share with others that caring for loved ones does not have to be filled with problems.

Book Review: Last Call

Jerry Herships has had a calling on his heart for many years. He serves bag lunches and communion to those in need. This is his story where he shows each step along the way to here. He first left home for Los Angeles to become a stand-up comic and is now a minister. I loved the way that he brings some of his humor into the writing of this book. It made it a book that is open to all. Whether a comedian, working in a pub or serving those in need, his voice comes through in this book. He shows that we may not always see what God has planned for us and there may be some discomfort when the plan is laid before us, but when we listen the rewards are plentiful. They may not be earthly but you still know they are there.

This is a wonderful book, but don't be surprised if, during the book, you begin to think about God's plan for your life and be prepared to follow.

Book Review: The Tank Man's Son

Mark Bouman is a loving father, husband and a Christian. Each of these are hard to imagine when reflecting on the difficult life he had as he was growing up. He became the tank man's son when his father brought home a true tank. This is a man who was liked to collect "toys" like these and he was not afraid to let his anger out on his family.

The reader will find their heart breaking as they read this account, yet filling again as they see how this boy was able to find Christ and how this faith saved his life.

I thought that I would have a difficult time reading this book but I am so glad that I stayed with it and finished it.

Review: Founders' Son by Richard Brookhiser

I am a history buff, which began when I began looking into our founding fathers through Lincoln. When I found this book I was very excited. It did not let me down.

Founders' Son, by Richard Brookhiser, looks at the influence that the founding fathers of the United States, not only his Presidency, but most of his life. To see the breakdown of the influences gives the reader a better insight of Lincoln and those that fought for the ideals for which this nation stands. Brookhiser did an exceptional job of helping the reader understand the man, Abraham Lincoln.
